The HMS study programs

Scriptwriting and media law, business plans and media production – the educational facilities on the arts and media campus Finkenau are interdisciplinary, helping students expand their horizons beyond their own branch of study.

Media Management

  • MBA in Media Management (Full-time)
The two-year Master program is aimed at graduates of all fields seeking responsible positions in the media. Three topics are emphasised, “Business Administration & Management Skills“, ”Media Business & Production“ and ”Context & Values“, connecting economic know-how, legal issues as well as conceptualisation and conversion of creative processes.
  • Executive MBA in Media Management
The part-time Master course is especially tailored for young executives in the media who wish to complete their existing specialized knowledge with established media-specific management know-how. The course is divided into four terms, in part taking place with and at international partner colleges and noted media education facilities (Adolf Grimme Institute, Hans Bredow Institute, Henri Nannen School of Journalism, RTL School of Journalism, Miami Ad School, VDZ).
Journalism
  • The Master of Arts in Journalism
The two-year Master program is directed at future journalists with a first degree (BA, Diploma, MA) and thus, sufficient technical skills in an area relevant to journalism, who are aiming for a responsible position in journalism. In four central areas (”Media Systems & Journalism“, ”Conditions & Values“, ”Communication Skills“, and ”Media Production“) students can acquire journalistic key qualifications: Professional and topical competence, mediation, social orientation and self-reflexion. A media economic perspective complements the curriculum.
Film
  • The Film program
The two-year film course enables graduates to work successfully and immediately in their chosen profession as scriptwriters, producers, directors or cinematographers. The course is largely practical, including project work. Theoretical contents are always deepened with practical exercises. At the end of each term, students produce a short film, instructed by tutors and under realistic conditions. Producing within budget and according to production schedules is mandatory.
Since its foundation in 1991, a total of 24 students commence the course every two years, in the four specialisations offered: script, production, directing, and camera.
