As part of the Finkenau Arts & Media Campus, HMS is located close to the lake Alster and lively entertainment districts in the centre of the bustling city of Hamburg.
The historic U-shaped brick complex with its small towers and annexed buildings was built by master architect Friedrich Wilhelm Schumacher in the late nineteenth century. Although it has undergone extensive restoration since early 2005, the characteristic charm of its Art Nouveau architecture has been preserved.
When it was founded, the Hamburg Media School campus represented a unique opportunity to combine a variety of different academic disciplines under one roof. Four programs have been established since HMS was founded.
The first of these, the MBA in Media Management, was established in 2003. A year later, film students from the University of Hamburg began their studies at the Finkenau campus. In its third year the Hamburg Media School started to offer the Master of Arts program in Journalism and an Executive MBA program for professionals. Since then, programs from Hamburg’s Academy of Fine Arts, the Multimedia Kontor Hamburg, and the renowned Miami Ad School have found a home on-site. The Design, Media, and Information Faculty of the University of Applied Sciences will be moving to the Finkenau campus.
The relatively small size of the campus encourages interdisciplinary exchange between faculty and students. As a result, film students can learn about the economic aspects of their field, and MBA students produce cinema and television reports.
With its on-campus TV and radio station TIDE, jointly produced by students and Hamburg locals, the Finkenau Arts & Media Campus has another highlight.
In autumn 2005, construction of a studio complex housing five studios began. The studios with areas of 80 to 175 sqm will be used for teaching purposes only, i.e. they will be available to all students and staff. The building will also house the administrative and production offices of the campus' television and radio stations.
The historic façade of the campus buildings conceals the state-of-the-art technology inside. Wireless internet, digital cameras, and AVID editing rooms as well as flatscreen televisions complete the technical infrastructure at HMS.
A rehearsal studio and a digital editorial training desk are provided for students’ practical learning. There is also a lecture hall on campus audiovisually fully equipped. Thanks to the cooperation with the University of Hamburg, the students of the Hamburg Media School can use all University libraries, in addition to the library on campus.
