Purpose of the Film Workshop

The HMS Film Workshop supports the production of all short films, which are shot at the end of every term, in its role as producer and unit production manager. The Film Workshop also assists students during the practical modules which complement the course.

Furthermore, the Film Workshop is responsible for the distribution of the student productions and all contacts into the film industry including agencies, actors, and professionals from all relevant departments. Hamburg and northern Germany based companies request its technical services and competencies.

History
Established in 1992, the Film Workshop was initially created as a charitable trust association to support the former film course at the University of Hamburg. It aimed at stabilising the financial situation of the film department as well as recruiting well established professionals who were able to mentor the students. The associations’ members – primarily Hamburg based production companies and service providers in the Film & TV industry – have put a strong emphasis on assuring a high level of teaching quality in the postgraduate film course.
In autumn 2004, the film course and the Film Workshop were integrated into the newly founded Hamburg Media School, which offers two-year courses in Media Management, Film, and Journalism leading to a Master’s degree. This new academic structure allows students to study and cooperate with fellow students on an interdisciplinary base. The old association had been dissolved and its members have been relocated to the film advisory board at Hamburg Media School.
