Requirements for the Film Program

Open-mindedness, interest, creativity and motivation - these are all qualities that you should bring to Hamburg Media School. A strong interest in cinema and television is a must.

Enrolment in the Film Program at Hamburg Media School requires the following:

1. General Requirements

  • Abitur or equivalent Secondary School degree
  • A university degree from a university or an arts school (degrees have to be in a film-related field from a German or foreign university)
  • Exceptions can be made for those who completed a professional training and can exhibit work experience of at least three years.
  • Excellent German and English skills, both written and oral
  • Participation in the application procedure and completion of all application documents.
2. Specific department requirements

Directing
Applicants to the Directing Department should have practical skills and experience in the field of cinema. A record of short films produced in video or film format is a benefit. Practical experience of professional TV and cinema productions would also be helpful. Applicants should have a substantial reservoir of ideas and possible projects for movies, TV series, etc. Knowledge of the history of cinema, movie esthetics, and film theory as well as movie technology is required.

Camera
A university degree is helpful but not a must. Applicants must, however, possess practical knowledge of how to operate a movie or video camera. At least one internship, assistant or similar position with a professional film or television production company is required. Basic knowledge of the history of film, film aesthetics and theoretical foundations of film as well as movie technology are required.

Scriptwriting
Scriptwriters should have exceptional skills in visual dramatic writing and be capable of developing convincing dialogue, with a resourceful pool of ideas and projects for feature films, series etc.

Production
Production applicants should have several years of practical experience in the movie industry. It is desirable that candidates have already produced short films in video or film format. Each applicant should have completed at least one internship with a professional television or movie production company. Applicants should have a substantial reservoir of ideas and possible projects for movies, TV series etc. Knowledge of the history of cinema, movie esthetics, film theory as well as movie technology is a must.
