The Application Process

Here you will find details of application requirements for the Master of Arts in Journalism.

Please take notice of the following steps:

Step 1 – Written and Online Application:

I. Online Application
Please fill in all required information until the end of the application deadline. The online application will be sent to the HMS through an automatic e-mail function.

II. Written Application
a) Certified copies of German “Abitur” or equivalent Secondary School diploma
(results of tests to be completed after the application deadline can be handed in later)

b) Letter of Motivation
Please describe, on a maximum of two pages, why you would like to participate in the Master of Arts in Journalism.

c) Written Article
Please write a classic news article about “Journalism Studies in Germany”. The article should not exceed 1,500 words.

d) Passport photograph (with your name and signature on the back)

e) Other reports and certificates

Please add proof of at least six months of working experience, e.g. internship in journalism or public relations, to your application.

If you cannot complete your application on a PC please write legibly in black ink to ensure easier processing of your application. We will only process complete applications. Exceptions will only be made for exams to be completed after the application deadline and will be decided on a case-by-case basis.

Step 2 – Personal Interview and Assessment Center:

The best applicants will be invited to participate in one of our assessment centers. This consists of a number of single and team exercises as well as a presentation in front of the admissions committee.

Assessment centers take place on our campus in Hamburg.
The final decision is made by our admissions committee and candidates are notified as soon as the assessment center is over.
