Curriculum

Upon successful completion of the Master of Arts in Journalism, students will be well-equipped to work in various different fields of journalism. Classes are taught by renowned professionals.

The Master of Arts in Journalism is made up of four core modules:

Media Systems & Journalism
conveys professional expertise. In this discipline students are educated in media systems, media history, media economics and media law, as well as editorial management.

Conditions & Values
focuses on cognitive skills and social orientation. The most important journalistic research methods, as well as current trends in media usage and effects, are the focus of this module. Trends in journalism and questions of media ethics and critique are also taught.

Communication Skills
presents essential journalistic skills such as research and interview, as well as the media-specific presentation of information. Students are taught relevant communication skills for print, radio, television, and new media. This module also includes specialist knowledge in the areas of news/politics, economics, entertainment/culture, sports, science/medicine etc.

Media Production
allows students to apply their theoretical knowledge to specific projects and helps preparing them for their chosen field of journalism. Through close cooperation with Hamburg’s media companies (newspapers, magazines, radio, television and new media) students are taught to think on a cross-media level. This module also includes lectures on specific media markets, genres and formats.
