Welcome to Hamburg Media School
Tailored to Professional Practice
Since its establishment in 2003, the Hamburg Media School (HMS) has operated at the dynamic intersection of academic education, artistic practice, and industry. The School prepares exceptionally talented students and early-career professionals for successful careers in the creative, business, and academic sectors of the digital media industry.
HMS offers a comprehensive portfolio of academic programmes in the fields of Media Management, Journalism, and Film. These range from state-accredited Master's degree programmes and a Bachelor's programme in Digital Media to a variety of continuing professional education opportunities. In addition, HMS actively contributes to digital transformation through a broad spectrum of research activities. In collaboration with renowned academic and industry partners, the School produces trend reports, peer-reviewed scholarly publications, and applied research commissioned by external organisations.
HMS is organised as a public–private partnership. Alongside the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the University of Hamburg, and the Hamburg University of Fine Arts, more than 50 companies - primarily from the media sector - support the School as founding partners and sponsors. Close collaboration with the digital media industry, as well as with academic and research institutions, ensures an interdisciplinary, research-led, and practice-oriented learning environment. Small class sizes foster close interaction between students and faculty and enable intensive individual supervision.
Located on Hamburg's Art and Media Campus, HMS is embedded in a vibrant network of higher education institutions, media companies, and creative professionals. The School also operates TIDE, a television and radio broadcaster that provides students and researchers with access to state-of-the-art media production facilities and infrastructure.
